SolarProtect Nanoceramic Solar Panel Coating

SolarProtect (ECS 5003) is a clear, solvent-based hydrophobic nanoceramic coating formulated for solar panels and greenhouses. It creates a micro-thin, slick surface designed to reduce the adhesion of waterborne dirt and other deposits and make ongoing cleaning easier.

Manufactured in the USA, SolarProtect is the longer-term coating option in our solar panel cleaning and coating systems. Proper surface preparation, a thin application and adequate curing are essential to the finished result.

What SolarProtect Is Designed to Do

  • Create a water-repellent surface: a clear hydrophobic finish helps limit contaminant adhesion and supports easier cleaning.
  • Protect the coated surface: the product data describes UV resistance, adhesion and durability for its intended applications.
  • Support solar maintenance: the coating is designed to help maintain cleaner light-transmitting surfaces between cleanings.
  • Fit a planned service program: use SolarClean for preparation and discuss SolarRestore for ongoing coating maintenance.

Actual results depend on the surface, environment, application and maintenance. Contact us to discuss the expected benefits for your installation.

When to Choose SolarProtect

Consider SolarProtect when your project calls for a protective coating in addition to cleaning. It can be discussed as a coating service for solar installers, cleaning contractors and maintenance teams, or as part of an owner’s ongoing maintenance plan.

Choose SolarClean for cleaning and preparation. Review SolarRestore for annual protection or maintenance of an existing SolarProtect surface. For heat-diffusion applications, see SolarSink.

Provide the panel manufacturer, model, existing coating and surface condition so we can discuss suitability before application.

Preparation and Application

  1. Prepare the surface. Remove oils, dirt and other contaminants. Wash with ECS 101 SolarClean and aim to apply SolarProtect within 24 hours. The maximum window may extend to three days only if the weather stays rain-free and the panels remain clean; remove any new dust, pollen or other deposits before coating.
  2. Rinse and dry. Follow SolarClean’s rinse and drying instructions. If air drying, rinse water must be clean and mineral-free. The coating surface must be dry and remain free of new contamination.
  3. Test first. Trial the application and finished properties on a low-value test article or panel before working on valuable surfaces.
  4. Apply a thin, continuous film. The application instructions specify a dampened mohair roller locked against rotation or a lint-free cloth squeegee. Work in a linear motion with slightly overlapping passes, starting at an edge and continuing to complete coverage.
  5. Allow curing. Dry-to-touch and full cure are different stages. The documents identify approximately five days for full ambient crosslinking; temperature and airflow affect the timing.

The application instructions target a dry film of 3 to 5 microns. Thicker is not better. We have field experience with spray application, but drone application has not been tested. Start with a small trial area to evaluate cleaning, coverage and coating uniformity before a full spray or drone project. Use overlapping passes as needed to achieve the intended film thickness; avoid heavy application that can cause deposits, streaking or curing problems. Most SolarProtect applications require only one coat. A full second coat is necessary only when site-specific environmental conditions call for additional protection. If a second coat is needed, allow the first coat to cure before applying it. Contact us to plan the trial and confirm the method.

Maintenance and Handling

Continue inspecting and cleaning coated panels as part of a maintenance plan. SolarProtect is intended to reduce snow and ice adhesion; it does not guarantee that panels remain free of accumulation. Weather, panel angle, frame design and application affect the result, and raised frames can still hold buildup along the edges. Our system guidance uses SolarClean for cleaning and SolarRestore to refresh the coated surface. Follow the applicable product guidance before recoating or washing a newly coated panel.

SolarProtect is solvent-based. The liquid product is flammable; the cured coating is non-flammable. The SDS calls for appropriate ventilation, protective eyewear and chemical-resistant gloves when handling and applying the liquid. Keep the material away from ignition sources and prevent release to surface waters. Request the current SDS for complete handling, storage and disposal information.

Published planning coverage is approximately 2,000 ft² per gallon at a dry film thickness of 3 microns. Actual material use depends on the surface and application method. For a project estimate, include the total surface area, panel count, surface condition and application method. A spray trial can help establish project-specific material use and the allowance needed for wind and overspray. Read the coating FAQs or use the form below.
